The IBR Asia Group introduces its new Director, Datuk Seri Azman Ujang
Having started as a cadet reporter in Sarawak with Bernama, the Malaysian national news agency, this consummate journalist rose in his 37-year career through the ranks to become Editor-in-Chief and CEO.
After some years of retirement from Bernama, he was appointed in 2016 as its Chairman, thus becoming the first person to have held all the three top positions of Editor-in-Chief, CEO and Chairman in Bernama’s 52-year history.
His term as Chairman ended on Jan.31, 2020. And he joins The IBR Asia group effectively as a Director in May 2020.
He was a past Chairman of the Malaysian Press Institute and secretary-general of the Organization Asia-Pacific News Agencies.
Azman has travelled extensively overseas to cover assignments, especially the official visit of Prime Ministers Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his successor Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. He has been at the forefront of reporting on Malaysian political and economic developments. He has conducted exclusive interviews with top leaders of the nation and ASEAN.
He still writes a column (‘Off the Cuff’) for The Sun, in which he takes unusual angles advocating and making an impassioned plea for greater public concern, role and participation to curb the alarming and growing number of deaths among motorcyclists and pillion riders.
Azman has conducted training in media interview techniques on camera and at news conferences for senior executives and has worked with crisis communications teams on their media and communications strategies. He is a consummate interviewer himself who has said that he was never satisfied asking mundane or run-of-the mill questions of people he interviewed because “I always want to get the best story possible.” This, therefore, gives his interview training both during on-camera interviews and during news conferences additional pungency which strengthens the performance of those company spokespeople when being interviewed.
He has participated in many crisis and emergency management exercises as well as a regular speaker on media matters to top civil servants and universities.
Because of his interactions with presidents, prime ministers and ministers, he can take a more strategic focus on crisis management.
Datuk Seri Azman Ujang brings a huge wealth of wisdom and perspective to The IBR Asia Group and together, leveraging off the collective strengths of both, we look forward to increasing the mileage in communication plans for our clients and the government.
